If so, the Qatar Professional Development Fellows Program may be a perfect opportunity for you to engage in some of the best professional development programs in the country for little to no cost!

Through a generous grant from the Qatar Foundation International, the Center for Advanced Research on Language Acquisition (CARLA) at the University of Minnesota in collaboration with Teacher Seminars at Concordia Language Villages (CLV), Minnesota, will bring together K-16 Arabic language teachers from across the United States for an unprecedented program of learning and practice. Selected Fellows will be able to attend a CARLA summer institute of their choice, and will put their new knowledge to work at an internship at the CLV Arabic Language Village.

Two graduate-level credits will be awarded for the successful completion of a CARLA summer institute (http://www.carla.umn.edu/institutes/index.html) and a two-week internship at the Arabic Language Village either during the summer of 2011 or the summer of 2012. CARLA summer institutes focus on key topics such as assessment, culture, and second language acquisition. During their CLV internship, the participants will prepare lesson plans and co-teach activities and language learning groups with master teachers from the Arabic Language Village. The program is relevant to Arabic teachers of all age groups.

Qatar Fellows will be awarded scholarships valued at $5,000.

Travel to Australia - PAI Conference

We are pleased to confirm that the Pan Asia Institute will provide funding (airfare, insurance, accommodations, and meals) for up to four IU students to participate in the Australian National University's (ANU) Asia Pacific Week 2011, July 10-14, 2011 in Canberra. This highly-selective, five day conference will bring together 100 graduate and undergraduate students from across Australia and around the world to participate in seminars, panel discussions, and other forums related to the Asia Pacific region. It presents a wonderful opportunity for students to network not only with peers, but with leading scholars and professionals focused on Asia and the Pacific. The attached announcement as well as the APW Overview provide further specifics (please note that the latter refers only to graduate student participation - the organizers have confirmed that this is a typo and accomplished, upper-level undergraduates are also welcome to apply). Any student interested in participating in the program must have a cumulative GPA of 3.5 or higher and have an academic interest in the region. Undergraduates must also have at least 75 credits completed at the time of application. A brief application form (attached), a resume or cv, and one letter of recommendation are needed to apply. We regret the incredibly short lead time, but only learned of this opportunity recently.

Sofja Kovalevskaja Award for Doctoral Research

The Sofja Kovalevskaja Award recognises outstanding talent and creative research approaches with exceptional conditions: With an award amount of up to 1.65 million EUR each winner receives valuable starting capital to spend five years pursuing an innovative research project at a research institute of his or her choice - untroubled by administrative constraints. In addition, the establishment of their own junior research team enables the award winners to lay an important foundation for a promising academic career at a very early stage. Eight awards are expected to be granted. The programme is funded by the Federal Ministry of Education and Research.

Outstandingly qualified junior academics of all disciplines from abroad who completed their doctorate less than six years ago are eligible to apply for the Sofja Kovalevskaja Award. It is also possible to submit applications immediately after finishing one's doctoral studies. The programme is also open to German researchers provided that they have been working abroad for more than five years. Applications must be submitted by 1 September 2011.

Islamic Studies Program - Essay Awards

Salman Alani Award For Best Graduate Essay on Topics in Classical Arabic

In recognition of his many contributions to the study of Classical Arabic Grammar and Phonology, as well as his over forty-seven years of service to Indiana University, the Islamic Studies Program is proud to announce the 2011 Salman Alani Award competition for best graduate essay on topics in Classical Arabic

MA and PhD students in any department are eligible for the $500 award. Essays must be carefully researched, formatted, written, and must focus on Classical Arabic-Islamic texts, with priority given to analyses of Classical Arabic works on grammar and phonology. To be eligible, the essay must be at least 5000 words. Students must be currently enrolled at Indiana University at the time the paper is written and at the time the award is granted. Students may only submit one essay per competition and must include an accompanying letter of endorsement from an IU faculty member who can attest to the paper’s strength of research and potential contribution to the study of Classical Arabic-Islamic texts.

STARTALK 2011 Teacher Training for Arabic and Turkish

M4HUMAN Fellowship

In cooperation with the European Commission, the Gerda Henkel Foundation launches a new fellowship program.  The funding initiative M4HUMAN (Mobility for experienced researchers in historical humanities including Islamic Studies) gives outstanding researchers the opportunity to spend a longer period of time at a foreign research institution of their choice.

The call for proposals is open to researchers from all over the world.  Main areas of research are the disciplines promoted by the Gerda Henkel Foundation - History, Prehistory and Early History, Archaeology, Art History, Historic Islamic Studies, Legal History as well as the special program "Islam, the modern nation state and transnational movements."  The deadline for application is 30 June 2011.

Medieval Studies Institute Fellowship

Dear colleagues,

Once again, the Medieval Studies Institute has been awarded a one-year fellowship to assist departments in recruiting outstanding candidates who have applied to graduate programs in the College and who have expressed an interest in working in Medieval Studies.  (See the attached memo for details.)  MEST provides the fellowship for the student’s first year at IU, and the home department provides the rest of the student’s funding package.  We try to meet with the candidate during the candidate’s campus visit and provide additional information about opportunities at IU.  We do expect that students who receive the MEST fellowship will enroll in at least one MEST course during the fellowship year. 

The MEST Executive Committee will be happy to consider one nomination from each participating department.  If you have identified such a candidate, please send a copy of the student’s complete application to me through the MEST office (BH 650) by February 8, 2011, at 5:00 PM.  We will try to report the rankings to you within seven days. 

Since MEST has been chosen to host the Medieval Academy’s Vagantes conference in spring 2012, we believe that we have yet another reason to attract outstanding graduate students to Indiana University.

2011 Palmer-Brandon Prize in Humanities Competition

Dear Colleagues,

I am pleased to announce the competition for the 2011Palmer-Brandon Prize, the College’s largest award to undergraduate students majoring in the humanities. This year the selection committee will make up to two awards of $20,000 each to current third year juniors to continue their academic, scholarly or creative pursuits. The prize is based on merit, without regard to financial need. Those selected to receive this prestigious prize are expected to be in the top one percent of undergraduates in their fields in terms of academic achievement and potential.

Attached to this message you will find a flyer and application materials. Please note that the application procedures for this award have changed slightly this year. Departmental nominations are no longer allowed, however, students are still required to submit three letters of recommendation from IU faculty members in the humanities.

This prize remains restricted to certain departments/disciplines. We must not violate the requirements of the initial gift agreement and therefore we cannot open this competition to all departments. Eligible are students majoring in: Classical Studies, Comparative Literature, East Asian Languages and Cultures, English, Fine Arts (Art History or Studio Art), Folklore and Ethnomusicology, French and Italian, Germanic Studies, India Studies, Near Eastern Languages and Cultures, Philosophy, Religious Studies, Slavic Languages and Literatures, Spanish and Portuguese, Theatre and Drama.  Additionally, students majoring in African-American and African Diaspora Studies, Anthropology, American Studies, Communication and Culture, Gender Studies, Individualized Major Program, International Studies, and Jewish Studies can be considered eligible, if the humanities form the focus of the student’s coursework, research, career plans, application materials, recommendations, etc. 

Due to the restrictions of the gift agreement, we must treat this as a humanities prize;  if students apply but are ineligible, they cannot be considered but will have spent large amounts of time and effort in vain (as will the faculty recommending them).     

In addition to an extensive application, finalists will be required to meet with the Selection Committee for a personal interview on Thursday, March 24.  The deadline for receipt of all application materials (including faculty letters of recommendation) is 4:00 p.m. on Friday, March 4, 2011.

At this time we ask that you post the attached flyer in your department and circulate the application to those undergraduate majors who meet the following criteria and who, in your estimation, are among the top 1% of students you have taught here. To be eligible for this award, applicants must: 

• be current third-year students with junior standing, planning to graduate in May or Aug 2012
•  be enrolled full-time at IUB both semesters of 2011-2012
•  have high academic merit, including a minimum College GPA of 3.750 (Note: In the past; recipients of this prize have had cumulative College of Arts and Sciences GPAs of 3.9 and higher.)

College of Arts & Sciences Dissertation Year Fellowship

The Graduate Division of the College of Arts and Sciences invites graduate programs to nominate their most outstanding Ph.D. or  M.F.A. candidates for the 2011-2012 College of Arts and Sciences Dissertation Year Research Fellowships. Stipends for the dissertation year fellowships are $18,000 each. These fellowships enable advanced students to engage in focused work leading to the completion of their dissertations or thesis projects. These fellowships do not include fee remission. Fellowship winners are expected to devote full time to research.  Please make this information available to interested students as well as notify students of any internal department deadlines or practices regarding the nomination process.

Only Ph.D. candidates and M.F.A. candidates are eligible. Doctoral nominees must be formally advanced to Ph.D. candidacy by the nomination deadline. Nominations must include: the nomination form (submitted by the student online), two letters of recommendation submitted online, and the department's ranking. All nominations and supporting letters of recommendation must be submitted online February 1-March 1, 2011.

LSE Kuwait Programme - PhD Scholarshipes

The Kuwait Programme on Development, Governance and Globalisation in the Gulf States at the London School of Economics and Political Science is pleased to announce two scholarships for full-time PhD students of £12,500 each per annum, renewable for up to three years. This scholarship, which will be available for an Autumn 2011 start, will be awarded on academic merit. You should have a Master's degree in a political or social science related discipline. You should also have demonstrated research interests in issues of political economy or political science or international relations and a regional focus on the Gulf States. Those with a knowledge of Arabic will have an advantage.

The successful candidates will be those who can contribute to the Kuwait Programme's own research objectives. The selection panel are seeking to support young and very capable researchers who will benefit from the support the Kuwait Programme can offer in developing their proposal into a significant work of research.

You should submit a CV and research proposal of no longer than two pages A4 by email to Ian Sinclair: i.sinclair@lse.ac.uk.

The strongest applicants will be selected and interviewed to discuss their proposal in more detail. To take up the scholarship the successful candidate must be accepted onto a PhD Programme at the LSE starting in Autumn 2011.

INSTITUTE OF TURKISH STUDIES: 2011-2012 GRANTS PROGRAM

The Institute of Turkish Studies (ITS) is pleased to announce its 2010-2011 grant competition in the field of Turkish Studies. The following grant opportunities are available only for United States citizens (or those who have acquired permanent resident status in the US) who are currently affiliated with a university in the U.S. The institutional grants are available only for educational institutions located in the United States.

• Sabbatical Research Grants for faculty members conducting research in the field of Turkish Studies during the course of their sabbaticals. This new category award will be awarded to one or two scholars each year in the field of Turkish Studies in the amount of $25,000 per recipient.
• Dissertation Writing Grants for graduate students in the social sciences or the humanities who have completed all the requirements for the Ph.D. except their dissertation by June 1, 2010. These grants are for advanced students who have finished the research stage of their dissertation. Stipends range from $5,000 to $10,000.
• Summer Language Study Grants for graduate students in the social sciences or humanities for summer travel to Turkey for language study in preparation for graduate research at an established Ottoman or Turkish language facility. Normally, the recipients of these grants are expected to spend a minimum of two months in Turkey. Stipends generally range from $2,000 to $3,000.
• Post-doctoral Summer Travel Grants to scholars in the social sciences and humanities for travel to Turkey to carry out research projects. Normally, the recipients of these grants are expected to spend a minimum of four weeks in Turkey. Maximum award is round-trip airfare to Turkey.
• Grants for Undergraduate Study for students who wish to participate in study abroad programs in Turkey. These awards will be made to institutions, which will be responsible for their distribution to qualified applicants. ITS welcomes applications from institutions seeking to either expand or develop overseas programs in Turkey. Maximum award is $10,000.
• Matching Seed-Money Grants for New Positions in Turkish Studies for institutions. ITS offers matching seed money grants to universities for the establishment of new positions in any discipline in the field of Turkish Studies. Universities are expected to make commitment to establish a tenure-track position for this position. Maximum award is .50 FTE of a junior faculty appointment.
• Matching Seed-Money Grants for New Positions in Turkish Language Instruction for institutions. ITS offers matching grants to universities to hire instructors to teach Turkish language. Universities are expected to match these grants for three years. Maximum award is $20,000 per year for three years.
• Matching Lecture, Conference, and Workshop Grants for university-sponsored lecture series, conferences, and workshops in Turkish Studies to be held in the U.S. Maximum award is 50% of the funds required to cover the costs of these events.
• Grants for the Publication of Scholarly Books and Journals to cover part of the publication costs of scholarly books and journals in the field of Turkish Studies to be published in the U.S.
• Teaching Aids Grants for the development of instructional materials in the field of Turkish Studies, such as language teaching materials, maps, slides, etc.
• Grants of Library Acquisitions to institutions in the US for the purchase of books related to Turkish Studies (maximum award $2,500 per institution).

Studies in Second Language Acquisition is hiring an Editorial Assistant

Studies in Second Language Acquisition (SSLA) will be hiring a senior graduate student to serve as Editorial Assistant for 2011-2012. The position is for the university budgetary year (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012) and is half-time. Ordinarily, the Editorial Assistant succeeds to the position of Assistant to the Editor. Therefore, a two-year commitment is required. The current stipend is $16,800 for 12 months. The position also carries a full tuition remission.

SSLA, published quarterly by Cambridge University Press, ranks as one of the leading journals in the area of second language acquisition and applied linguistics. The Editorial Assistant position offers an unusual opportunity for a graduate student interested in language learning and acquisition to become familiar with ongoing research as well as to gain valuable editorial experience.

SSLA will accept applications from graduate students in linguistics (general, applied, French, Spanish, etc.), second language studies, speech sciences, educational psychology, psychology, and foreign language education. Applicants should be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of the field of second language acquisition and an excellent mastery of written English grammar and style. Of equal importance is the applicant's ability to meet deadlines, do thorough and efficient work, and assume responsibility without supervision. Computer skills are indispensable. Editorial experience is helpful but not necessary.

DUTIES: The Editorial Assistant is responsible for ordering books for review, serving as liaison with the Associate Editor, maintaining office files and correspondence, participating in in-house evaluations of submissions, copy-editing manuscripts, reading proofs, and assisting the Editor and the Assistant to the Editor in making decisions regarding manuscripts, journal policies, and other tasks pertinent to maintaining a high-quality publication. Additionally, he or she assists the Editor in his capacity as review editor of The French Review by preparing linguistics rubric reviews for press.

The Educational Opportunity Fellowship (EOF) is designed to enable promising students who are first generation college graduates and who do not fare well in conventional competition for graduate fellowships. The Ronald E. McNair Graduate Fellowship is for outstanding McNair Scholars entering Ph.D. or M.F.A. programs at Indiana University, Bloomington.

American Institute for Yemeni Studies Fellowship Program

The American Institute for Yemeni Studies annually holds competitions for fellowship programs supporting in-country residence and research in Yemen, one for U.S. citizens and one for citizens of the Republic of Yemen, funded by grants from the State Department's Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs. The next deadline for the Yemeni competition is January 15, 2011. The next deadline for U.S. researchers is March 1, 2011.

Please note that while AIYS' normal fellowship program that supports both research and Arabic study in Yemen is described below, there currently is a ban on using State Department-funded fellowships for travel to Yemen. For the current competition, AIYS is therefore accepting ONLY applications for research on Yemen in venues other than Yemen. For the same reason, at this time AIYS is NOT accepting applications for intensive Arabic study.


ECA-funded Fellowships Awarded through AIYS

Both ECA-funded competitions have strict eligibility requirements that must be met before applications may be submitted. Before inquiring about either fellowship program (U.S. scholars or Yemeni scholars), please be sure that you meet the requirements for the program in which you are interested.

Competition for U.S. Scholars

Support for this program comes from a grant from the State Department's Bureau for Educational and Cultural Affairs (State/ECA) through the Council of American Overseas Research Centers (CAORC).

Eligibility is limited to U.S. citizens who are enrolled as full-time graduate students in recognized degree programs or who are post-graduate professionals. Awards are made on the basis of merit as determined by a review committee of scholars from among AIYS' members and member universities. All funds currently available or pending come from US government sources and may be awarded only to US citizens. These fellowships are fully taxable after legitimate deductions for professional expenses.

1. General Fellowship Program

Proposals are invited from graduate and post-graduate scholars for feasibility studies or research projects. Collaborative or group projects are eligible for funding. It is permissible to combine Arabic language study with a research or feasibility project.

There is no restriction as to field or discipline. Project funds may at present be used either for research in Yemen or for research on Yemen elsewhere. Projects are not normally funded above $10,000. Applicants may need to secure additional funding for other expenses or for extended research periods, but in the case of multiple awards AIYS reserves the right to modify or cancel its fellowship offer. A full statement of conditions governing fellowships may be obtained from the AIYS office. Researchers whose projects will take them to more than one country are advised to consider applying to CAORC's Multi-Country Fellowship Program as well as to AIYS.

Scholars planning to conduct research in Yemen funded by other sources are reminded that AIYS continues to provide its normal research support services in Yemen. For details contact the AIYS office or consult the research permit page on this site.

2. Intensive Arabic Language Study

AIYS normally offers students and scholars the opportunity to obtain intensive Arabic language training in Yemen through AIYS' ECA-funded individual fellowship program. Since AIYS Arabic language funds may only be used for study in Yemen, these fellowships are subject to the ban on using ECA-funded fellowship funds to travel to Yemen. This competition is not offered for the present deadline.

How to Apply for an AIYS Fellowship:

There is a $25 processing fee for applications to the U.S. fellowship program; the fee is waived for applicants who are individual AIYS members.

All applicants must submit the original plus five copies (i.e., a total of 6) of each of the following:
--a completed application form (available from AIYS Administrative Office and also on this site);

--a curriculum vitae;

--an application narrative consisting of:

(a) for applicants for Arabic language training grants: a short statement explaining their interest in Yemen and their background in Arabic language;

(b) for all other applicants: a project description (maximum suggested length 4-6 double-spaced pages), plus a proposed budget and schedule.

Required supporting documentation (to be sent directly to AIYS postmarked by the application deadline; single copies are acceptable):
--all applicants should provide three (3) letters of recommendation to be sent directly to the AIYS office by the application deadline. These letters should preferably be on institutional stationary.

--pre-doctoral applicants must have both undergraduate and graduate transcripts sent; recent Ph.D. recipients are encouraged to provide a graduate transcript.

George Washington University Post-Doctoral Research Fellowship

The Institute for Middle East Studies invites applications for the position of Post-Doctoral Research Fellow in Middle East Studies. Fellows may come from any academic discipline, as long as their primary substantive specialization is in the Middle East, North Africa, or Iran. Candidates should have a Ph.D. in hand by the starting date of September 1, 2011. The Fellow must be in residence at IMES for the duration of the grant period (September 1, 2011-May 31, 2012), and is expected to take an active part in its intellectual life, including a research presentation. This position offers a fellowship of $40,000, medical benefits, and access to the library, a computer, and an office.

IU's GradGrants Center

The GradGrants Center is here to support them in applying for grants and fellowships (both internal and external, including FLAS, Fulbright, SSRC, CAORC, and others). The GGC is a free service for all IU graduate students, administered through the University Graduate School. Our goals are to support IU's graduate students in getting funding and becoming skilled and confident proposal writers. We also meet with students to help them identify additional funding opportunities for the various stages of graduate study (coursework, language study, fieldwork, dissertation writing). Our consultants are grant-winning advanced graduate students, and we work one-on-one with students to give them feedback on funding proposals. Our consultants can point out whether students effectively address the stated criteria for selection, how well they match their proposed course of study to the purposes of the funding agency, and whether they have left out any relevant experiences or qualifications. The students we work with who receive funding tend to start early, get feedback as a proposal evolves, and understand the missions of the programs to which they apply.

Applications for the College of Arts & Sciences Travel Awards may be submitted online November 1-December 1, 2010. Awards are usually in the range of $300.  Preference will be given to students who have not previously received a Travel Award and for travel during the academic year 2010-2011 (August 1, 2010 -July 31, 2010).

 

Travel Award winners must provide documentation of their presentations in the conference program following their return from their travels. Travel and lodging receipts are not required.

The College does not require a letter of recommendation from faculty; however, students may include a letter in their application if the department requires it.

Germany - Graduate

The Luce Scholars Program funds graduate students in a variety of professional fields. It is intended for young leaders who have had limited experience of Asia and who might not otherwise have an opportunity in the normal course of their careers to come to know Asia. The program provides stipends, language training and individualized professional placement in Asia. Campus deadline is October 15, 2010. The Critical Language Scholarship (CLS) for graduate students for overseas intensive summer language institutes in thirteen critical need foreign languages.
