Critical Languages Research Analyst Program

Paid Internships for
Summer 2011

The U.S. Intelligence Community (IC) has several unclassified open source analysis unites in the Washington, DC area to conduct research related to national security issues. We are looking for undergraduate, graduate and doctoral students who can conduct native language research on the internet, apply social science research methods to identify social political trends, and critically analyze and present information.

Students majoring in the following areas are encouraged to apply: Middle Eastern Studies, Persian Studies, South Asian Studies, Asian Studies, African Studies, Comparative Politics, International Relations, Intelligence Studies, National Security Studies, Economics, Political Economy, Cultural Anthropology, Comparative Sociology, Demography, Defense Studies, Social Psychology, Public Policy, History, Political Islam, Nuclear Engineering/Physics, Computer Science/Engineering,
Political Geography, Library Science, Geographic Information Systems and other science and technology fields.

QUALIFICATIONS:



  • Fluency
         in written Arabic, Chinese Mandarin, Dari, Georgian, Hausa, Hindi, Kurdish,
         Pashto, Russian, Somali, Spanish, Turkish, Turkmen, Urdu or Uzbek
         required.  Advanced listening
         comprehension required. 

  • Excellent research and oral and written communication skills
  • Excellent analytic/critical thinking skills
  • Advanced internet proficiency
  • Excellent interpersonal skills and ability to work in a close team environment
  • Ability to work with minimal supervision in a fast-paced environment
  • Strong academic background (3.0 GPA or higher)
  • Completion of at least the sophomore year of college by the beginning of summer 2011
  • U.S. citizenship required*
*The work performed will involve unclassified research and will not require full security clearance processing.  However, each selected individual will undergo some security processing.  Final selection for the program is contingent upon the successful completion of the security vetting process.  The  security vetting process will not equate to eligibility for access to classified information and only allows participation in the Critical Languages Summer Research Analyst Program. 

COMPENSATION:

This will be a paid position for a 40 hour work week for a maximum of 10 weeks.  The hourly rate will be commensurate with education and experience.  There are no benefits other than free parking.  Work location is not easily accessible by public transportation.

Portland State University - Outreach Coordinator

The Outreach Coordinator of the Middle East Studies Center (MESC) assists that Director and Program Manager in fulfilling the educational mission of the Center and PSU. The position coordinates MESC's year-round outreach program of on- and off-campus conferences, lectures, workshops and cultural events and directs the shape and content of the outreach website. The Outreach Coordinator maintains relationships and collaborates with PSU departments, community organizations, other higher educational institutions and educational and professional organizations that are involved with the study of the Middle East. The Outreach Coordinator promotes PSU's academic and international programs by providing information, meeting with students and assisting on special projects of the MESC Director and Program Manager and the Vice-Provost for International Affairs.

*Primary Responsibilities*
1 Coordinate MESC Outreach Program. Oversee year-round scheduling of lectures, conferences and cultural events; secure speakers, obtain and allocate funds, evaluate programs, collaborate with community organizations, refer speakers, set goals, provide programs and resources for K-12 educators, secure and process acquisitions for MESC resource library with more than 1000 items
2 Build and coordinate the MESC Outreach website. Manage construction and maintenance of dynamic web presence for outreach web site; provide online resources for K-12 educators, businesses, government, media and the general public.
3 Assist the MESC Director and Program Manager on administration, grant writing, fund-raising and special projects. Meet with the Director and Program Manager regularly, provide information, plan and schedule events and meetings and represent MESC on and off campus as needed. Meet with potential and current funders and support PSU alumni relations.
4 Support PSU's Middle East-related Academic Programs Assist faculty and students in obtaining resources, speakers, and professional development opportunities.
5 Oversee MESC's Official Outreach Communication Manage MESC listserv, oversee website content, submit newsletter descriptions of MESC activities, publicize MESC programs, provide information about MESC to the media, and on- and off-campus constituents and create exhibits and displays.
6 Assist the Director and Program Manager in MESC planning, goal-setting and program development Meet with the Director, Program Manager and other staff, faculty and advisory boards to do long term MESC planning and goal setting. Acquire information and participate in setting priorities and decision making process
7 Support Students focused on Middle East Studies Provide opportunities for international U.S. students to be involved in outreach activities
8 Support PSU Internationalization Efforts through the Office of International Affairs Support and provide information about the Middle East to staff working with international students and on overseas study programs. Collaborate with other OIA units on special projects.

* BA/BS in Middle East Studies, International Studies, Education, or a related field with 3+ years of related experience or Masters in Middle East Studies, International Studies, Education, or a related field with
1+ year of related experience.
* Successful completion of a background check or a valid driver's license.

EMPLOYMENT: Assistant Professor- Arabic

Department of Languages & Literatures

Position:

The Department of Languages & Literatures at the University of Wisconsin-Whitewater is seeking a dynamic and versatile teacher of Arabic with a broad background in literature and cultural studies for a full-time tenure-track position for the 2011-12 academic year. Responsible for regular teaching of beginning through advanced Modern Standard Arabic in the classroom and via distance education. Occasional teaching of an upper-level general humanities core curriculum course (World of Ideas) that emphasizes a multidisciplinary approach, Middle Eastern/African literature in translation and/or a course on contemporary Islam is also anticipated. 12-hour teaching load each semester.

Starting Date: August 24, 2011

Qualifications:

Ph.D. or ABD in Arabic language and literature, comparative literature or closely related field. The ideal candidate will have native or near-native fluency in Arabic, a strong background in second language teaching pedagogy and comfort with technology-rich learning environments. Prior second language teaching at the university level is required. Familiarity or experience with distance education, including emerging web-based technology for language learning is highly desirable.

Studies in Second Language Acquisition is hiring an Editorial Assistant

Studies in Second Language Acquisition (SSLA) will be hiring a senior graduate student to serve as Editorial Assistant for 2011-2012. The position is for the university budgetary year (July 1, 2011-June 30, 2012) and is half-time. Ordinarily, the Editorial Assistant succeeds to the position of Assistant to the Editor. Therefore, a two-year commitment is required. The current stipend is $16,800 for 12 months. The position also carries a full tuition remission.

SSLA, published quarterly by Cambridge University Press, ranks as one of the leading journals in the area of second language acquisition and applied linguistics. The Editorial Assistant position offers an unusual opportunity for a graduate student interested in language learning and acquisition to become familiar with ongoing research as well as to gain valuable editorial experience.

SSLA will accept applications from graduate students in linguistics (general, applied, French, Spanish, etc.), second language studies, speech sciences, educational psychology, psychology, and foreign language education. Applicants should be able to demonstrate extensive knowledge of the field of second language acquisition and an excellent mastery of written English grammar and style. Of equal importance is the applicant's ability to meet deadlines, do thorough and efficient work, and assume responsibility without supervision. Computer skills are indispensable. Editorial experience is helpful but not necessary.

DUTIES: The Editorial Assistant is responsible for ordering books for review, serving as liaison with the Associate Editor, maintaining office files and correspondence, participating in in-house evaluations of submissions, copy-editing manuscripts, reading proofs, and assisting the Editor and the Assistant to the Editor in making decisions regarding manuscripts, journal policies, and other tasks pertinent to maintaining a high-quality publication. Additionally, he or she assists the Editor in his capacity as review editor of The French Review by preparing linguistics rubric reviews for press.

Assistant Professor of Arabic - University of Wisconsin-Madison

The Department of African Languages & Literature at the University of Wisconsin-Madison invites applications for a full-time, tenure-track faculty position in Arabic beginning August 2011 at the rank of assistant professor.

Applicants must have a Ph.D. the appropriate area with a specialization in Arabic. Candidates must be able to teach Modern Standard/Classical Arabic at all levels; have native or near-native fluency in Modern Standard Arabic and familiarity with at least one spoken dialect; have knowledge of the historical development of Arabic, of Islamic civilization, and of Arabic-based cultures of Africa; and be competent in linguistic approaches to literature.

The department would value additional competencies in the development of innovative teaching materials, particularly materials that incorporate various technologies to best effect; familiarity with current theories; and an ability to teach in the areas of Arabic literature in translation, literary criticism, classical approaches to Arabic grammar, and/or the linguistic structure of Arabic.

GradGrants Center Position Opening

The GradGrants Center is seeking a graduate student who holds (or is eligible for) graduate work-study funding for an assistantship beginning the spring semester.



THE PROPOSAL-WRITING CONSULTANT/TRAINER is one of two graduate assistant positions which works directly with fellow graduate students in the GradGrants Center, a graduate student service located in the Wells Library-BL, sponsored by The University Graduate School and available to graduate students of all IU campuses. The two consultants handle the day-to-day operation of the GradGrants Center and share training responsibilities (i.e., presenting or enlisting speakers, scheduling rooms, preparing visual aids). Our consultants assist students in their search for external funding sources and are available to work one-on-one with graduate students in discussing and critiquing their grant proposals.


QUALIFICATIONS: Successful proposal-writing experience, editing skills, teaching experience or experience in planning and presenting special-interest training programs, the ability and personality to interact well with the public. A one-year commitment to the position is strongly preferred.

This position provides invaluable opportunity to learn of various funding sources and to improve one's own proposal-writing skills. The experience is extremely valuable to future faculty. The position is a .375% FTE during the academic year (i.e., 15 hours per week) and is eligible for student health insurance. The salary is $9,121 for the academic year (with fee remission) and $2,129 for the summer. The person hired will work half or all of the summer as arranged.

Job Opportunity in the Palestinian Territories

CRS is responding to what has become a chronic humanitarian crisis in Gaza with on-going emergency response activities funded by several donors. Given Israel’s recent easing of its blockade, CRS is now including early recovery activities in its Gaza programming. As part of a consortium, CRS has submitted a three-year, $15 million proposal to USAID for the Palestinian Community Assistance Program(PCAP). The Program Manager II will be responsible for managing CRS’ humanitarian assistance programs in Gaza, training and coaching CRS staff and partners in emergency preparedness and response, and expanding the Cash-for-Work and Cash-for-Internship programs.

Job Responsibilities: Program Quality: 1. With key program staff and stakeholders, ensure program’s strategic objectives and results are fully accomplished and meet expected technical quality standards.
2. Ensure that vision and plans for the program are innovative and are in line with CRS and donor strategies.
3. Oversee periodic technical reviews and manage changes in program direction and focus.
4. In collaboration with program staff, provide guidance and technical oversight to partners and other collaborating agencies to ensure that lessons of sound practice are documented and disseminated.
5. Oversee program's monitoring and evaluation system, using data analysis as the basis for measuring performance. Ensure that M&E learning is incorporated into evolving program plans.
6. Ensure integration of program interventions with other CRS programs or through linkages with other service providers.
7. With program staff, ensure the delivery of quality training, technical assistance and administrative and financial support to all partner organizations, including the selection and coordination of consultants.

Management and Administration: 1. Manage program budgets, including tracking of financial and material resources.
2. Ensure accurate and timely reporting of program finances and progress status, review actual financial performance against the budget, and explain variances on a regular basis.
3. Ensure compliance with all CRS administrative and operational procedures and policies, as well as applicable donor regulations.
4. Approve program expenditures, budget adjustments, and cost modification requests to donors.

Monitoring and Evaluation: 1. Visit project sites regularly to monitor CRS and partner activities.
2. Develop monitoring check list for field staff, in order to track activities and necessary follow up for Gaza-based programs.
3. Monitor project finances to ensure funds are being used according to the approved budget and project objectives, while coordinating and liaising with the CRS/Palestine Finance Department on all aspects of grant management.
4. Oversee correct financial reporting on projects and release payments or advances as per agreement.
5. Compile and submit narrative reports as per donor requirements.

IUPUI - Open Position for a Lecturer in Arabic

An open position for a Lecturer in Arabic within the Department of World Languages and Cultures in the Indiana University School of Liberal Arts at IUPUI is now available. The position is for a three-year contract renewable anually.

Qualifications
Education: Ph. D. or Master's Degree in Arabic, Middle Eastern Area Studies, or the teaching of Arabic as a second language.
Language: Native or near-native fluency in Arabic and English required.
Experience: Experience in teaching Arabic language and culture at the college or university level and evidence of excellence in language teaching. Applicants whose work incorporates a global perspective and demonstrated commitment to issues of diversity in higher education are particularly encouraged to apply.

Responsibilities
Teaching: Twenty-four (24) credit hours of beginning, intermediate and advanced Arabic language per academic year. (or ca. 3 courses per semester, depending on number of credit hours per course.) Possible opportunity to teach Middle Eastern culture courses in English.
Service: Coordinating Arabic instruction at IUPUI in consultation with Chair; updating course syllabi as necessary; collaborating with other Arabic instructor/s; maintaining office hours to facilitate contact with students; advising minors and individualized majors in Arabic and Islamic Studies. Active participation in appropriate program, department, and school functions and activities is expected.
