Illuminated Verses: Poetries of the Islamic World

For the past year, City Lore and Poets House, two non-profit cultural groups in New York, have been working to put together a series of programs called Illuminated Verses: Poetries of the Islamic World.  We, along with our cultural partner the Asia Society, are pleased to extend an invitation to you and your constituents to attend these programs, performances, and interpretive panels taking place this spring from April 21st to May 7th.  Illuminated Verses speaks to the variety of poetic forms and styles in the Islamic world, while at the same time demonstrating the central role of poetry in cultures where Islam is practiced.  We explore improvised poetic forms and performances of ancient and venerated work from poets such as Rumi and Hafez, along with contemporary literary poetry in settings ranging from Iran, Iraq, Yemen, Pakistan, North and West Africa. We explore the central role of poetry in the lives of Muslim men and women who memorize poems, buy and sell poetry on cassettes, sing the work of venerated poets, and utilize poems in social and political negotiations.  Scholars and poets Reza Aslan, Mohammed Bennis, Persis Karim, Khaled Mattawa, and Amir Vahab are among the participants. As cultures clash over religion in our world, Illuminated Verses: Poetries of the Islamic World invites us to see one another anew.

CALL FOR PAPERS: The Middle East & North Africa Uprisings

As the premier English-language Shi‘a journal, the Journal of Shi‘a Islamic Studies (JSIS) is continuously in search of the latest and best research into Shi‘a Islam. Now in its fourth volume, JSIS
covers all areas of Shi‘a studies, from the historical to the contemporary and from the theological to the philosophical. JSIS has a prestigious advisory board and is covered by the leading relevant indexing services.

Following the ever unfolding political events in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) we would like to welcome submissions which relate these events to Shi‘ism. Contributions may, for example, be on the following areas:

• The MENA uprisings and the expected return of the Mahdi

Mideast Panorama - Call for Papers

The editors of Middle East Panorama would like to announce a call for papers for the Spring 2011 edition of the student-run journal from the Middle East Center at the University of Utah.We welcome submissions from all disciplines, asking that they pertain theoretically, thematically, or geographically to the Middle East and North Africa.

This edition will focus on the theme of “Identity and Religion.” The issue of identity and religion raises many questions, including: What factors contribute to individual or communal identity? How does religion affect identity in the Middle East and the rest of the world? Has the concept of identity changed in recent years?

While we encourage submissions pertaining to “Identity and Religion,” as usual article selection will not be based solely on relevance to the theme. In addition to original scholarly articles, Middle East Panorama also welcomes submissions of book reviews of works published in or after 2007. If you wish to be added to a list of potential reviewers, please email a short bio with research interests (geographical location, time period etc.) to the email address below.

Submissions resulting from term papers written for classes or as a result of independent studies are welcome.

Students are particularly encouraged to submit manuscripts that they intend to publish in a journal in the future and to use the IULC Working Papers Online as a stepping stone to a full-fledged journal submission through the review and revision process.

Call for Papers -- IULCWP Online Volume 10

The primary goal of the IULC Working Papers Online will be to publish annual volumes of outstanding graduate and exceptional undergraduate IU student work.


Volume 10 of the IULC Working Papers Online will be published this year. We are currently accepting submissions. The next target date for submissions will be October 15, 2010. Undergraduate students, graduate students, and faculty members from all departments are encouraged to submit original papers in linguistics. Submissions resulting from term papers written for classes or as a result of independent studies are welcome.

The Submission Process in summary:

1. If you are a student, your submission must have faculty sponsorship. Generally, this will be either the professor of the class from which the paper resulted or the advisor of the independent research project. Find a faculty sponsor for your submission, and revise your paper according to his/her comments.

2. Format your paper for submission according to the guidelines provided online at www.indiana.edu/~iulcwp/submit.html.

3. Submit your manuscript either electronically or in hard copies according to the guidelines provided at www.indiana.edu/~iulcwp/submit.html. Hard copies will be returned upon completion of the review process.

4. Your manuscript will be reviewed by two students and/or faculty members.

5. Four to six weeks after submission, the Editorial Board will return your manuscript along with reviews and specific suggestions for revision. Further information about reviewer guidelines can be found at www.indiana.edu/~iulcwp/review.html.

6. For each manuscript submitted, you will be required to review 2 manuscripts submitted by other authors.

Call for Papers: Islamic Journal of Women’s Studies*

Academics from all around the world are invited to submit articles for the first issue of the Islamic Journal of Women’s Studies, to be published by ICAS Press (http://www.islamic-college.ac.uk/Research/Research.html) twice a year.

The Islamic Journal of Women’s Studies will provide an international platform to share pertinent articles covering both theoretical and practical aspects of gender studies in Islam. Articles which engage with the Islamic discourse will be encouraged. Contributions are welcome from men and women of any academic, ideological, religious, political, national, or philosophical perspective as long as the articles meet the standards of academic rigour and are relevant to Islamic female thought, perceptions, history, or experience.

The Journal of Peacebuilding and Development is calling for papers for Volume 6 Number 2, which is to be published in May 2011. JPD is a tri-annual refereed journal providing a forum for the sharing of critical thinking and constructive action on issues at the intersections of conflict, development, and peace. Articles submitted to the Journal should be original contributions. Articles should be based on case studies and must link is-sues of peace and/or conflict with some aspect of development. Please indicate clearly if the article is under consideration by another publisher. Articles are read by the journal’s editors as well as by two to four outside reviewers (one or two for briefings).

The following types of submissions will be considered: Full articles: critical case studies and/or thematic discussion and analysis of topical peacebuilding and development themes, 7,000 word maximum, including references and endnotes; Briefings: discussions of 1) training, peacebuilding and intervention strategies and impact, 2) policy review/analysis, or 3) country briefings, 2,500 word maxi-mum; Book reviews: 900 word maximum; Resources: notices of new books, reports, upcoming conferences, videos, e-communications and websites, 150 word maximum; Documents: declarations, communiqués, and other relevant NGO or multilat-eral organisation statements, 1,000 word maximum. The Mawlana Rumi Review

A journal that publishes articles, reports, review articles and book reviews in English and French.
