Graduate Program -- The Sotheby Institute

The Sotheby Institute is offering a semester graduate course in "The Arts of Asia".


This course explores in survey fashion the artistic products of the leading religions and philosophies of Asia, from Islam, Hinduism, Jainism, and early Buddhism in India, Southeast Asia, and the Islamic World, to Adoism, Confucianism, Shinto and Mahayana Buddhism in China, Korea and Japan. Focusing on sculptural and architectual work, the course offers students introductory yet intensive object-based study. It also provides associated contextual learning, investigating themes such as court life o fthe Indiana and Persian sultanates and the Mughals; civil and military East Asian court life; and the Euopean opening-up of trade with China and Japan from the 16th to the 19th centuries. This course concludes with a review of contemporary art and its markets in India, Iran, Southeast Asia, China and Japan.
